St. Josaphat School Advisory Board Minutes

April, 12, 2010

 

The meeting was called to order by Jim Eberle at 6:10 p.m.  Bridget Dougherty-Corum gave the opening prayer.

Approval of Minutes

The March 1st, 2010 minutes were approved with no changes.

 

Pastor’s Report (Fr. Rich)

·       The Spring Phase of the Capital Campaign is winding down. We are now over $3.6 mm in pledges. The Spring Phase runs until May 16, though the Campaign will continue with new parishioners, etc..

·       Bishop Kane will be at St.Josaphat on May 16th for a parish blessing.

·       Parish finances remain a concern; something will need to be done.       

Principal’s Report

·       Living Stations: Thanks to Mary Conley=Teresi and Dave Keene for leading the children and to Mary Flores for her hard work on the costumes.

·       Enrollment is 373 as of today..

·       High Schools: It’s been a very unusual year for high school application process and we have many students still undecided; we have had students accepted at Whitney Young, St. Ignatious, Loyola, Trinity, Jones, Rauner and DeLaSalle and are waiting on more.

·       Miss Cannon met with each teacher before Easter break to go over her observations and evaluations. 

·       Teachers were offered contracts for 2010/2011 school year and have until April 25 to accept.

·       SJS teachers and administration will be meeting for 3 two hour sessions after school to plan for next year.

President’s Report

·       The Board’s goals for 2009/2010 were reviewed.

·       The May School Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 3rd.at 6:30 pm in the rectory.

Committee Reports

·       Finance – (Joe Kucala) 

·       The 2010/2011 Budget was finalized and incorporated into the overall parish budget. No feedback was received regarding the tuition increase or the change in multi child discount.

·       Based upon review of the updated School P&L, as of February we anticipate being within 1% of budget.

·       Need to exercise discipline on the expenses within our control.

·       Received comments regarding fees for credit card payment of tuition, and an inquiry about possible discounts for upfront payment of tuition. 

·       Marketing (Heidie Maslo-Wolfe) – .  No update.

·       Athletics (Kelly Egan) – Basketball has ended and volleyball has started. May 14th is Spring Fling -May 26 is Athletic Banquet    

·       Education (Rosemary Kelley) Additional science supplies have been purchased for the Junior High.   The summer reading committee met with Mrs. Talbot and is in the process of amending the list for jr.high,(Kit Waight) There is an ongoing effort to recruit more people to help with leveling books for the education committee. .  

·       Ad hoc Alumni Association  (Heidie Maslo-Wolfe) – no update .

·       Ad hoc Diversity (Bridget Dougherty-Corum) –It was recommended that this subject should be revisited once SJS is in a position to accept additional students.

·       Ad Hoc Scholarship (Marty Doyle) – Remains on hold for the foreseeable future due to complexities posed by Capital Campaign.

·       School Board recruitment (Kit Waight): Kit Waight has interviewed Bridget Dougherty-Corum, and that interview will be included in the next issue of Chew the Phat, and will also be placed in to the bulletin. Kit is looking to interview another Board member. .  

New Business / Old Business

There was no new or old business to discuss.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM. Bridget Dougherty-Corum then led the Board in a closing prayer.

The next Board Meeting will take place on May 3rd, at 6:30 pm in the rectory.
